Program at a Glance

The agenda has been laid out to allow participants to obtain optimal exposure to all aspects of the Congress: scientific sessions, posters and exhibits. Social events have been planned throughout to encourage networking, and enough free time has been left to allow participants time to enjoy everything that Toronto has to offer.

Concurrent Session Topics - A Note About Streams and Themes

The concurrent sessions agenda of the WUWHS 2008 Congress covers topics formatted in a unique fashion, providing delegates with the opportunity to pursue a curriculum through 10 comprehensive streams or to pursue a theme-based curriculum that crosses all streams.

In the concurrent sessions table on pages 10 and 11, the 10 streams are numbered 1 through 10 and run vertically. There are six themes within the streams that are represented by different colours as per the table key. The concurrent sessions are shown in bold in the "Program at a Glance" table on the next page and numbered C1 to C10.

Kent Jonsson, MD, PhD

Kent Jonsson, Professor of Surgery, has been working at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare for the last 15 years. He came to Zimbabwe from the University of Lund, Malmo, Sweden after having been working with Professor Bengt Zederfeldt for 13 years. The research in Malmo was focused on healing of intestinal anastomoses as measured by biomechanical and biochemical methods. In 1982/83 a research fellowship with Professor TK Hunt in San Francisco was granted, in order to focus on methods for tissue oxygen measurements and relate these measurements to healing. These methods were subsequently transferred to Malmo and used in patients for assessment of perfusion and oxygenation in the postoperative period. The findings were related to healing in subcutaneous wounds and resulted in succesful supervision of some doctors producing work ending with PhD thesis. In Zimbabwe the research has been focused on healing of burn wounds in patients with HIV infection and immune deficiency. This research has also resulted in succesful work ending with defence of PhD thesis. This work is continued together with work as a full time clinical professor of surgery with responsibility for the postgraduate training of surgeons in Zimbabwe.
